Tips to Keep the Officer Happy
With the summer in full swing now, that lead foot of yours is going to be pushing down on that right pedal a lot more. If you are the unfortunate one that has to see those red and blue flashing lights in your rear view mirror, always remember a happy Police Officer is less likely to write you a ticket.
Here are a few tips to try and keep that officer as happy as possible:
- Pull over as soon as you can and try not to block traffic.
- Move as far off the road as you can, so the officer does not have to stand in traffic.
- Turn off your car, and put on your hazards.
- Always keep your hands visible.
- If it’s dark out, turn on your interior light.
- Roll down your window before the officer walks up to your car.
- Follow instructions.
- Be Polite.
- NEVER NEVER admit your guilt.
- Act intimidated.
While these tips might not get you completely out of the ticket, they will hopefully convince the officer to at least lower your speeding charge. It’s been my experience that if you are nice to the officer who pulled you over, for whatever reason, they are usually quite responsive and willing to help you out a little more, even though they just pulled you over. Remember, they are human as well and just doing their job.
One thing you should never do is admit that you committed the offence. Most officers now, especially in Toronto, have a microphone on their person that is recording what they say and what you say. There is also a camera in most police vehicles that records the whole event for their safety. Therefore, if you admit to the officer you were speeding or you never came to a complete stop at the stop sign, that is all recorded on the microphone. You have now just incriminated yourself. There is no way for you to get out of the offence if they play the video and microphone recording in court.
